Summer has blown by, so much so the Argo Not So Weekly Newsletter has been more not so monthly…Either way, the Argo has thrived thanks to everyone joining our daily ocean adventures.

Speaking of adventure, crab season is scheduled to rev up on the first Saturday in November. I say “scheduled” because there is a chance the season may be delayed due to potential whales in the area. This is something new for recreational anglers and could really have an impact on the rec fishery if the commercial and sports seasons start simultaneously.

Either way, we are taking reservations for crab/rockfish combos now with the hope of a standard start and good weather. Most of our bookings are full-boat charters, but we will have some trips available for individuals. Various weekends are already full.

On the salmon front, the season is waning, but still a very viable option through this month and hopefully to the close on October 31. The number of bites varies from day to day, but overall the chance of something relatively large eating your bait is good. The key to salmon this time of year is having faith and patience. A slow start is in no way an indication of how many fish will end up in the box.

Of course, there will be days the fish are on hiatus, or unwilling to eat. Weather permitting, the Argo will occasionally switch to rockfish, providing solid action and good eats for the table. We don’t do many dedicated rockfish trips, but if you have a group looking for multiple bites it’s an intriguing option.

We’ve done very few half-day trips this summer primarily because the bay has been devoid of a viable fishery. Unfortunately, halibut and striped bass have taken the summer off leaving very few keeper-size species in the bay. On the upside, there has been a small influx of larger halibut showing up in the past week.

If you have a group looking for a last shot at salmon the only open weekend is October 2. We do have two spots available for salmon this Sunday. There’s plenty of room most weekdays, with a few open bay half-day trips coming up.
